Local SEO for Houston businesses: the unglamorous checklist

No growth hacks in this article. Local search is won by businesses that do a dozen boring things correctly and keep doing them — while their competitors chase whatever trick is trending. Here are the twelve, in the order we fix them.

The profile (do these first)

01

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Every field. Hours, services, service area, photos that aren’t stock. “Complete” outranks “clever.”

02

Make name, address, phone identical everywhere. Website, profile, directories — one comma of difference is a credibility leak.

03

Ask for reviews, systematically. Not a plaque by the register — a text or email after every completed job, with the direct link. Reply to all of them.

04

Pick the categories customers actually search. “Commercial HVAC contractor” beats “HVAC” if that’s what you sell.

The website (the part most vendors skip)

05

One page per service, in plain language. A page that answers “what does drain jetting cost in Houston?” outranks a page that says “solutions.”

06

Name your areas. Katy, Sugar Land, The Heights, Pasadena — if you serve it, say it on a real page, not a hidden list.

07

Fix the speed. Half your visitors are on a phone in a parking lot. Three seconds is the budget.

08

Add structured data. Business type, hours, reviews, services — markup search engines read even when people don’t.

The habit (where winners separate)

09

Publish answers, not announcements. One honest article a month answering a real customer question beats daily posts about your holiday hours.

10

Earn local links. Suppliers, chambers, trade associations, the little league you sponsor — real relationships that happen to link.

11

Track calls and forms, not rankings. Position three with calls beats position one without them. Measure what pays.

12

Review the numbers monthly. Double down on what worked, cut what didn’t, repeat. That’s the whole growth hack.

None of this is glamorous. All of it is fixable. And whether nearby customers find you or your competitor comes down to who fixed it.
